South Waterfront
A new neighborhood is being built in Portland, along the Willamette River south of downtown. For a thirteen month period, there are new artists in residence each month producing works in various media in and about this new neighborhood. I was the February, 2008 artist. A handful of these images are outdoors but the bulk of these pictures were made in the apartments of South Waterfront residents who graciously allowed me to wander around and photograph whatever spoke to me. The “Prologue” images were made during the months of previous artists in residence and they and the “Overture” and “Intermezzo” images were made in the official artist in residence office/work/exhibition space (except for the first image, which is from the lionized coffee shop which served as the provisional office). This work was commissioned by the South Waterfront Artist in Residence (AiR) Program, Sept/07–Sept/08, as part of its Monthly Guest Artist Series. Devoted to place-making,
